Adventure Tourism? We've got it!

Oh sure, we have a great reputation for our fabulous theatre, music, history, arts and events. But Hart County also offers you some of Kentucky's greatest adventure opportunities ... even in the wintertime.

Come now and check us out our caving, canoeing and hiking, and make plans to come back later, too. There's so much to do, once is not enough!

CAVING:  Our caves are open year-round.

Featured on The Discovery Channel's "Dirty jobs" series, Hidden River Cave is an 8-mile labyrinth dissolved by a subterranean river flowing beneath the historic small town of Horse Cave. In 1867, famed naturalist John Muir called it "a noble gateway to the birthplace of springs and fountains and the dark treasures of the mineral kingdom."

Guided tours descend 150 feet underground and last 45 - 50 minutes.

The Hidden River Cave Adventure Tour takes you off trail in an extreme option that involves strenuous hiking through muddy and wet cave passages and features an underground stream, domed rooms, and cave adapted animals. Reservations are required for the 2-hour or 3-hour. Ages 12 and up.

Closed for more than 50 years, Cub Run Cave reopened to the public in 2006. With new elevated wooden walkways and modern lighting,
Cub Run Cave is one of the region's newest attractions.

Located 15 miles west of Munfordville I-65 Exit 65, this cave has some of the world's most beautiful and unusual formations. The 1 1/2 hour guided tour  includes historic and geological interpretation of unique formations. Some cave animals may be present. The tour is on elevated wooden walkways with only a few steps.

One of the nation's most beautiful show caves, Kentucky Caverns is located at Kentucky Down Under. Kentucky Caverns is an active cave: when it rains, the water drips down through the ground and into the cave continually creating new formations. You'll see stalactites, stalagmites, cave popcorn, cave cauliflower and more on the 45-minute 1/4 mile guided tour.

CANOEING & KAYAKING:

Plan your adventure and lazy river canoe and kayak trips at Big Buffalo Crossing Canoe & Kayak.  Day or overnight tours can include camping, fishing, swimming, caving, and/or sightseeing. There is something for every skill level:

Johnson Springs to Munfordville (4miles/3hours): On their most popular ½ day trip you can choose to picnic at Green River Park & Arboretum in Munfordville at the end of your trip or try the optional walking trail between JS and Munfordville if you prefer walking to paddling.

Rio to Johnson Springs (8miles/4 hours): This is a nice laid-back canoe or kayak trip or good fishing trip with lots of history.Daniel Boone's son is buried in Johnson Springs, and Civil War enthusiasts will love paddling past General Buckner's farm.

Rio to Munfordville (12 miles/6 hours): Combine the 2 trips above.

Lynn Camp to Munfordville (24 miles/12 hours): This is their most popular camping trip with a nice secluded gravel bar to camp. You'll pass the famous 300 Springs waterfalls (local folks and people from across the U.S. come just to see 300 Springs).  Or shorten the trip to Lynn Camp to end at Rio, a good day trip (6 hours) if you don't want to camp.

Munfordville to Dennison's Ferry (21 miles/12 hours): Camping Trip. Always a nice trip to be able to go to Mammoth Cave National Park.  Bluffs get tall down toward cave; the river narrows some;and there is good fishing (no license required in the park).

Munfordville to Green River Ferry (29 miles/15 hours): This camping trip also goes through Mammoth Cave National Park. It is a more populated river trip with a  couple of caves on the side of the river, past famous Green River Ferry.

Hiking:

Green River Park & Arboretum in Munfordville features native trees and plants, with interpretive exhibits and educational displays.  The park also offers covered picnic pavilions, a children's playground, and primitive camping.

Green River Park Trail: This is a 3/4 mile riverview chip/seal trail around the park and arboretum.

Jenny Wilson Burd Memorial Trail: This moderately strenuous 4.5 mile (one way) trail along banks of the Green River goes from the park to Johnson Springs. As an option, you can contact Big Buffalo Crossing Canoe to rent a canoe for your return trip.
