Kentucky’s Cave Area is brimming with exciting
educational opportunities offering professionally
coordinated programs geared to students from
kindergarten through college.
Four
of our area’s major attractions offer educational
programs with teachers’ guides. Many more offer related
experiences. You can spend a day, but your students will
have so much fun you’ll want to stay longer!

Being a cave biologist
at Hidden River Cave is a Dirty Job!
Hidden
River Cave, recently featured on the Discovery Channel’s
“Dirty Jobs” series offers staff-facilitated, hands-on
activities that focus on geology, cave animals,
conservation, decision-making and team building.

Elementary programs include a 1-hour cave tour, an
American Cave Museum scavenger hunt and 2 group
activities for $8 per student, $10 per parent, teachers
free. Ranging from “Batty About Bats”, fossil making,
“Digging It” (a simulated archaeological site), karst
geology and water quality lessons, the classes are full
of fun! |
Middle
school, high school, scouts, youth groups and families
can travel off-stream in search of elusive cave animals,
delicate cave formations and underground streams on the
Wild Caving Adventure Tour. The trip is strenuous and
requires appropriate clothing, boots and gloves. Helmets
and lights are provided. The fee is $25 for a 2-hour
tour and $35 for a 3-hour tour. Both include museum
admission.

Discover prehistoric
herbivores and carnivores at Dinosaur World!
Budding paleontologists will love the educational
programs at Dinosaur World that focus on physical
science, biological sciences, energy transformations and
interdependence.

In
addition to exhibits, Dinosaur World has a
dinosaur-themed playground, a covered picnic area and a
large gift shop with dinosaur eggs, books, educational
materials, artifacts and toys. |

Fossil Dig

Activities include the Dinosaur Walk, Boneyard, Fossil
Dig, Mammoth Herd, Movie Cave and Indoor Museum.
Educational group rates: $5 per person, minimum of 12
for a group, free adult for every 10 students, group
reservations required.

Friends in the Outback Walkabout at KDU |
Bring
your students on a unique journey through the wonders of
Australia and experience unforgettable encounters with
the continent’s unusual creatures as they learn about
the culture and wildlife of the “Land Down Under”! |
Students can participate in hands-on, staff-facilitated
programs that will introduce them to kangaroos,
wallabies, emus, lorikeets, reptiles, Aboriginal
culture, shepherding, and more. Programs include: Tour
of Kentucky Caverns, Woolshed Program, Outback
Walkabout, Land of Lories, Scales & Tails, Camp
Corroboree, Taraba Station, Nature Trail, and Gem Mining
(additional cost).
Catered sack lunches are available by prior arrangement.

Experience the stage
with the professionals at
Kentucky Repertory Theatre!
Honored by USAToday as “One of the 10 best places to see
the lights way off Broadway”, Kentucky Repertory
Theatre, a professional equity theatre, reaches 15,000
students each year through its Educational Outreach
program.

Students can enjoy matinee professional
productions, Young Performers Productions
staged by Kentucky students, tour the
theatre and participate in theatre
workshops. The 1-hour workshops are limited
to 25 students, cost $50 for the group and
include: CATS Preparation, Introduction to
Acting, Improvisation, Stage combat,
Shakespeare, Behind the Scenes, and Career
Opportunities. |
